I have always loved history. I love learning about the past and the experiences that people have gone through. It is one of the reasons that I decided to become an archivist. I love reading old letters and handling artifacts from past lives. This love of history is also why I am such a sucker for nostalgia. There is a melancholy associated with nostalgia but there is also a beauty and romance. I hold on to artifacts from my past lives: letters, cassette tapes, books, old perfume bottles and even pieces of clothing. Each of these items is a direct link to a person, time or place, and a certain feeling.
This love of history and nostalgia is why I love photography as much as I do. I have the ability to capture a moment in time. I love photographing events in my life in order to preserve those memories. I also love taking photos of places and items that I may find that are not part of my own history. They belong to others and I revel in the thought of what these vestiges may have meant to those who used them.
